There is a story that our beloved jolly Santa Claus used to wear a green & white costume until the Coca Cola Santa appeared in their advertising campaigns to boost their winter sales in the 1930s.  This isn’t really true because advertisments featuring  red & white Santa costumes had already appeared even in the early 1900s. The modern image of Santa evolved over time from a collection of characters.  For instance, in the United Kingdom there was a character called Father Christmas who embodied the holiday season, but wasn’t initially associated with Christmas gifts or children.  The the picture of Mr Claus that we have today came from initially from Saint Nicolas who wore priest’s robes & has transformed into the now standardized white & red jacket & pants.  Although this standard did originate with Coca Cola, their widespread illustrated advertising campaigns by Haddon Sundblom have been at least partly responsible for putting the persona of a rotund, white bearded Santa Claus into the consciousness children all over America for best part of the last century.
